Hello, Alvin: First, I would like to express my deepest simpathies concerning the loss of your mom. Know, that you and her are & have been in my prayers. That said, I would like to wish you all the best on your birthday, and during the coming year. And lastly, I'd like to ask you to hurry the hell up and get your butt to New York city for some live shows. All of your fans in the N Y area, myself included, are going through some serious Alvin Lee withdrawel. Only a live appearance by you will ease our difficulties. :o) So hurry the frig up, will ya? B.B.Kings, the Beacon Theater, and Irving Plaza await your return. Until we meet up again, take care. Ron

I'm a few days late , but I'd still like to wish you a belated happy birthday and another great year ahead. I, and many of my friends are waiting eagerly for your return to New York city. There are a couple of prime venues that I think would be good for you and the band to play at. B.B. King's, Irving Plaza, and the Beacon Theater to name a few. Hope to see you soon. Take care, Ron

Happy birthday Alvin. Have a wonderful year and nothing but goods things, peace, love and serenity for the year. I have said this before to you and I would like to repeat it. The behavior of your former backup mates must hurt, but your behavior and class by not lowering yourself to their level and getting into the firing line reminds me that as great a musician as you are, you are a better man than a musician and an inspiration to me and my son. Bless you, Jon Temple

At last I have found out what beacame of the Best Guitarist I have ever seen, I saw Alvin and Ten Years After in Birmingham Town Hall in late 1960's early 1970's. I thought Alvin was an American I am proud to have found out he was born in Nottingham in the Midlands, England. I always remember even today the great performence I saw tahe night from Ten Years Aftre and the great guitar playing by Alvin! The Best!!

first I enjoyed so much a show here in Belo Horizonte/MG/Brasil in 1998 (I think) and was a great show of rock'n'roll. I realized a drean of teenager(I'm 47 years old) (Forgive my englih)I'll write in portuguese: poderiam colocar trechos das musicas em mp3 (1 min + ou -) .I have 6 vinil of the band TYA e 4 cds. Is it hoping for too much that footage of the full set of your Woodstock or Ilse of Wight shows would ever become commercially available? . Man that would make all of us on here SO happy . I gotta see live footage of Choo Choo Mama and all the classics before DVD goes out of fashion , its a crime to have all that stuff locked up in the vaults.

Alvin, I am so glad to see my favorite of all "In Flight" has been released on CD. I have looked for it ever since I had that album back around 1977/78. I love that picture of you with the owl, it is too cool! I was lucky enough to get to hug you and tell you "I just love you!" at St. Louis and begged you to do "Blue Suede Shoes" which you did as your encore song! It was a fantastic show and a wonderful memory for me. Thank you so much! You are so talented and appreciated by so many you will never know. Alvin Our thoughts are with you at this sad time. We have both lost our mothers in recent years and we know the heartache that you will be suffering. The consolation is that she was so proud of you and your achievements and supported you in your formative years even though Miss Lovatt at Glenn Bott did not forecast your great talent! She would want you to keep on rockin' so don't join her just yet! All the best mate Dave and Isobel aka "The Bishop"

Hi Alvin, Firstly, I want to express my sincere condolences to you on the loss of your Mother. Since I lost my beloved Mother (Do) 4 years ago this coming Christmas and my dear Sister (Mary) last Christmas, I can honestly say "I've Been There Too" . . . and my thoughts are with you and your family. I've been a fan since '72 or 73 when my aforementioned Sister and her boyfriend took me to see TYA at Liverpool Stadium at the grand old age of 14! This changed my life and I have been a lifelong fan since. I was inspired to buy a 335 which I still play - hugely influenced by you ! You signed an autograph for me outside Manchester Freetrade Hall which I have since lost!! (sacralige). As I remember it was just after On The Road to Freedom and you were in a White porche 911. It was always a dream of mine to come to Space Stuidios and jam with you but I am a realist . . a replacement autograph would be some consolation if that were at all possible. I just want to say thank you for your inspiration. PS These lyrics have always inspired me "You'll wake up one moring and start to feel good. the sun in the blue sky looks like it should. 'Cos time is a healer. It's strange but it's true. So keep lookin' forward the sun'll come through. " Best Wishes, Ian Hayes

Alvin, So sorry to hear of your Mother's passing. I know she's in a better place. One day you'll join with her again. I'm really looking forward to something new from you. I can't think of anything you've done that I haven't really enjoyed. I have never met you, but seen you so many times. Lived in Southern California for 25 years and saw you nearly every time you were there. At the Long Beach Arena, the Forum, even a club in Orange County, I think it was the Hungry Horse or something like that. That was a great show, the blues-rock vibrating the whole room and your lightning fast licks bouncing from the walls. I've probably seen you a dozen times and was never once disappointed. I think that's about the ultimate compliment. I hope you keep on rockin and pouring your heart and soul into your guitar. Thanks for all you've given me over the years.

Much love and deepest sympathies, dear Alvin, to you and your sisters in the recent loss of your mother. What a woman! How radiant, proud, and beautiful she looks in that photo with you from her 80th birthday! Rather than wish such a vigorous lady to "Rest in peace", somehow it seems much more appropriate to say: "Rock on, Dot!" I suspect that's just what her spirit is going to be doing, one way or the other. Since I firmly believe that all energies continue in new forms in Mother Nature's Great Recycling Plan, I'll make yet another wish: may your mother's spirit dance joyfully over the threshold of the Great Mystery into new adventures beyond her wildest dreams. Not that she didn't have some of those fulfilled already *this* time around. One need only look at that pic of her with you to see that she did. Love, Laurie

Creative website. I enjoyed browsing

Dearest Alvin, "I Woke Up This Morning" to another day of realizing that I've been carrying a torch for you for more than 30 years. You're the best there is. Whenever I gaze upon my recordings collection with the question "To Lee or not to Lee?", then you gotta know it's gonna be the former, hands down, and the rest can all languish beneath the cobwebs!! I'm no longer the carefree teen-aged bacchante kicking off my clogs and dancing ecstatically (or playing back-up guitar-- WAY back-up, compared to you) to "Going Home" or "Schoolgirl" et al in the frustrating confines of my adolescent bedroom. I'm now in fact a much wiser middle-aged bacchante who still wears clogs and flower crowns (sometimes!;-)), still loves to dance to you, and am a singer, musician, and hopefully up-and-coming recording artist in my own right. And you are still THE most exciting guitarist, THE most soulful singer, and, last but never least, THE sexiest man on the planet. In fact, aging has only lent even more depth and complexity to your incomparable appeal. Listening to you emote so profoundly and blaze out so mind-expandingly on songs like "Help Me" et al and your better-than-the-original cover of Lennon's "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" leaves me stunned every time. So thank you, Alvin, for existing, for being a real man of true power, passion, and integrity, instead of a precious, prancing, peacock poseur like so many these days (or for that matter even back in the old hippie days!), and for giving your adoring fans such a treasured abundance of pure unadulterated pleasure and genuine inspiration. We can't wait to hear your next masterpiece! BTW, I'm hoping to do covers of "All Life's Trials" and "Every Blues You've Ever Heard" on an upcoming album. Of course, if I could sing over YOUR glorious guitar for 5 minutes in person, I'd die happy. :-) Keep On Rockin', Alvin-- it keeps you young and bold, indeed. Love you always! Laurie <>

just wanted to echo the many accolades posted on this site. i can only agree with the many compliments wholeheartedly. in ur heyday, u guys really rocked. u had the youth, the fire, the power, the spirit of rip roaring rock n roll in every scorching tune you laid down. the many fans loved it. your mind numbing rendition of 'going home' at woodstock was awesome. friends who've caught some of your gigs while barnstorming thru europe say you still rock with the best of them after all these years and i can believe that's true. for the old timers who feel nostalgic from time to time and would love to catch you live in the states again and relive the magic, keep on rockin'!!

Hi Alvin, Hey man this is your wakeup call. I got the pot brewing. How about taking some chances? Sad to say that the releases from the 80's on are not up to your capability. Rock and Roll, as with any artform, is about taking risk. You have to admit that your best works are the one where you took risks. (In Flight, OTRTF, A Space in Time) The problem isn't the performances, your playing is better than ever. The problem is the material. Common man, how about some spaced out acoustic guitar, psycodelic jazz, funky grooves mixed with drum loops? Hope this doesn't ruffle too many feathers. I am a really huge Alvin Lee fan. Keeping it real. Lots of love. Chris

Hello Alvin, I am writing to you from Dublin,Ireland, couldnt find any other messages here from Ireland though all my friends are BIG TYA/Alvin Lee fans and they all know people who know your music. I saw you in 1990 in Hammersmith Odeon with Ten Years After and it was great to see you finaly ,that was my first time . I hope with this new album you will be playing near to these shores again. I also second that comment by another fan on this message board that there is not enough video footage of you playing live for us fans to watch, and we treasure what we have. Do you have any control of your concert footage? what happens to it all..is it just lying in the vaults. What a waste!! Well needless to say it would be so great if you were touring the UK again that you would play here in Dublin , there are so many venues here that would suit you. But if you go to the UK I'll be there to see you. I am so happy to see you back at the roots of what you started playing with Scotty as you have been paying tribute to him your entire career in one way or another. Everyone is looking forward to the album ,we are all looking forward to seeing you with your Cherry Red ,doing what you do best, blistering the Boogie and making us all happy in the process! This is a BIG Hello from your IRISH Fans. Niall(+the fan club)

Alvin Lee is an honest man.I've known him now for thirty three years and he never told me anything but the truth if he knew it.I am proud of the songs we wrote and the music we made.It was the innocent, sincere pursuit of freedom. It still is.I love Alvin. He is a great musician, songwriter, and producer. World class. But most importantly to me,he is a good man and my friend. For that i am thankful. God bless em all, mylon

Alvin, Just a heads up from a devoted fan. With all this controversy over your former bandmates new group, I thought I'd just put out a reminder to you that you are deeply loved and respected by your true fans. While some may be willing to accept TYA with someone other than you in the lead, your long time devoted fans will wait for the real thing. You. Can't wait for your new album!

Alvin, One more thing, I have a favor to ask of you. Can you film and film and film the creating of the NEW album with Scotty Moore and the good old boys ?? Please film practice sessions, maybe jams, maybe you doing studio work and certainly any concert that you might do in the future !! There is NOT enough footage of you playing and it would be great for all of your fans to have this available. There are just SO few musicians out there left who can REALLY play, as well as sing, write, arrange and produce original music. As a fan, we need more of you Alvin and your current videos are treasures for us. Jon and Josh Temple

Dear Alvin, You what we think of you here in Colorado. Your picture is on my son's desk and "stares" at him while he practices. I told Toni this, but I'll place it hear also, sometimes I take Josh to different music stores, just to play around with different guitars and buy some music material. Every single time Josh picks up a guitar and starts playing some of your songs, several people from the store and always the music staff, stop what they are doing and come to here Josh. I guess the sight of a shy 16 year old playing some of great music of all time and riffs they love just stops them dead. What I am pointing out is that you have SO MANY FANS who miss you here in the states and your music is still alive in all those people. You have more fans than you know in the states In one store, the instructor/salesman, picked up a guitar, cranked his amp and started playing what he remember from "A Space In Time" Jon Temple

I saw you in 1978 at the paramount theatre in seattle, wa. great show. i think i saw you one pore time in seattle but i was pretty stoned back then. i saw you again in '84 in berkeley, ca at the berkeley square. it was a small venue and i was front row with my girlfriend. you made quite an impression on her. i remember your band mates were fuzzy and tom tom. one of the few concerts i have a clear recolection of seeing after 19 years. one part i will never forget was the no name opening act which was quite good and their guitarist jumped from a solo into a rendition of led zeppelin's "ten years gone" and the whole place erupted. keep in mind that zep had disolved and jimmy page hadn't toured the states for quite some time but people were jumping up and down on the tables to see the guy. not to take anything away from your performance, i just conciously thinking: "i am never gonna forget this for as long as i live because only rock and roll can make people react this way."

Alvin, The first time I saw you you're band played at the Olympic Auditorium in Los Angeles around '70 or '71. I was still in High School as my friend, his brother and I were the youngest kids there. Man, my folks were so mad at me for comming home late that night. I told them that you did 3 encores and didn't finish until about 2:30 am. I saw you play at the Country Club in Reseda California early '80's. I've been wearing clogs all because I saw you wearing them that night in Los Angeles. I'm a Joe Pass student. I've played with Danny and the Juniors back in '82 and I've also played with Nick Gravenites in Occidental California a few years back. I can't wait to see you perform again. You are one of my favorite guitar players of all time. Have you ever heard of Doyle Dykes? I've met him a couple of times. He can really pick that guitar. I hope someday I can meet you. Let me know when you'll be touring again. I live in Boise Idaho now. I was in a very popular band here back in the mid '90's. I'm so glad that you're still playing!

Al, i had the good fortune to see ya live back in 80-something at Lowes in worcester mass. what a show....i doubt it was the 12 hits of blotter that made it so amazing!! maybe it was me, but the way the red white and blue lights were flashing a union jack behind the stage...(during"i'm goin' home")was cool as hell!! was that intentional, or was it just good blotskies? wonder, wonder... Thanks for 30 years of inspiration and the occaisional flash of what you jokingly called "culture" to a woman in the front row. I've seen and met and played with alot of guitar slingers, but your still the most primal cat i've ever had the great fortune of seeing. i look forward to the next 30 years! keep on rocking brother! wishing you and yours peace, Jimi Pocius "We're Smokin' Herb...hope ya'll are too!!"

I have been an Alvin Lee fan since 1969. Have seen him numerous times and every time he was great! Last time was in 1998 at the Sun in Anaheim. However, the BEST show I have had the pleasure to experience was at The Strand in Redondo Beach in 1997. We sat on the stage with Alvin. He was absolutely HOT! All Alvin and guitar! I wish that he would perform somewhere again here in Southern Calif. Alvin Lee is the finest guitar player!!!!

Hey Alvin - are you actually reading this?!? Anyway, I've been a fan since the early 70's when my big brother was bringing TYA records home. I've been a guitarist since about 1966, and the "SSSH", and "Undead" albums in particular were a MAJOR inspiration to me. Even my dad, who was also a guitarist/fiddler was a big fan. He went to his grave at nearly 80 years old saying that Alvin Lee is one of the greatest guitarists around. In 1999 I took my oldest son, then 6 years old, to his first concert, which was a TYA reunion at Pine Knob in the Detroit area. I kept telling him how important the band was to my own musical development. He was greatly impressed with Ric Lee's drum solo, and now, at age 9, plays pretty darn good drums! I take him out to local jam sessions and have him sit in with the big boys. We too are saddened to hear about the rest of TYA continuing on with the name WITHOUT Mr. Lee. I was hoping that the occasional reunion would be something that would continue to happen, but apparently not. Oh well. I'm looking forward to seeing the Alvin Lee Band the next time you're in the Detroit/Flint area! I also saw the "Ten Years Later" band at Flint, MI I.M.A. auditorium back in 79. GREAT band, and a GREAT show! I really thought that was a band that never got it's due. One of my favorite power trio situations DEFINATELY! Thanks for so many years of musical inspiration, and here's to many many more to come!

I am a blues guitarist and I got to meet you a few times. I was the kid who painted you a t-shirt. I had a thought for you . I am a huge fan and I love your playing especially your swing and jump blues and jazz styles. I would love to hear you do a jump blues recording, like Duke Robillard did with his album "Swing" and recently with Herb Ellis. You are my first inspiration to playing, I hate to pick a favorite, I have so many, I'll tell you you're up there with T-Bone walker, Tiny Grimes, Roy Buchanon, Clapton, Beck, Page, B.B., Albert, and Freddy King, Grant Green, Otis Rush, Kenny Burrell, Santana. I'd like to add, when I met Stevie Ray Vaughan, he was honored when I told him I was hanging his autograph next to yours. Thanks for the music. I can't wait to hear you with Scotty Moore!! Arno

Bear with me while I get a little sappy here, Alvin. You've been my inspiration since I was a teenager and first heard you play in my little corner of the world in Minnesota. I was so totally blown away then that I told everyone who would listen you were greater than Clapton. Greater than anyone. My son is actually named after you -Scott Alvin Lee Grunwald and guess what, he plays guitar and credits you as being his main influence. He'd better - he listened to you in the womb! Now he has a son (damn I'm a grandfather!) who's 3 years old and dances around to your music. I hope he'll carry that to adulthood like his dad did and then pass it on to his children...you're gonna live forever through your music. Thanks for everything. Looking forward to more new music from you soon.

Ya Hoo !!!!!! I love what Scot H. said about the new "supergroup" !! I can't wait to hear the results, yet another gift to all who love music. I had a feeling you were going to do something like this, in the rockabilly vein, but not as wonderful. What is so cool is that after listening to Zoom and 1994, I had some conversations with friend who is a guitarist, teacher and friend who was talking about the variety of styles you can play and fit in perfectly. He also thought what a great "rockabilly" artist you would be, that yoou have it nailed. I can't wait !! Another great addition to your body of music that is so rich, varied and strong. Hey Alvin great news that you're recording again. I'd been hearing that the other guys in TYA were recording with some new guy and worried that meant you'd retired Big Red, glad that's not the case. Back in 1971 I was crazy into drugs and loved to listen to great guitar players, especially to Alvin and TYA. I was reading a rock magazine that did an article on Alvin and he was quoted as saying he did not use drugs. Because of the "hero worship" I had for Alvin, and because I thought if he can make that kind of music without the influence of drugs, that was good enough for me! I NEVER touched a drug again. I was 18 and I'm now closing in on 50. Even though I now realize that the article was not quite right, to this day I still owe my sobriety to Alvin Lee; and he's still my hero. Thank you Alvin Lee.....Burt B.

I loved A Space In Time in quadraphonic stereo released back in the 70's on Columbia records, I thought it was the wave of things to come, then it vanished. Now Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon is being released in 5.1 surround sound on CD, as you know from DVD's the format is simply amazing. Any plans for any previous Ten Years After or Alvin Lee (past or future) solo stuff being put out in 5.1 format, or is that entirely up to the record companies?

Anyway after he listened to the cd he loved it also and said his Dad and him sat ther and listened to it over and over again. Thanks, Harley

Mr. Guitarman: I applaude your effort of sifting through the corporate red tape to get "On The Road To Freedom" released on CD. Now that all of your previous albums are on CD, may you concentrate on the new music in your head for us to hear? Hopefully we will be able to hear that music soon.

Alvin, The Ten Years After name came from what? Did I read somewhere that you said ten years after Elvis death? By the way, I saw you at the Olympic Auditorium and The Forum in Los Angeles. In the 1970's, that was a real spectacular adventure. Frank

I see where the other guys in TYA are trying to get it together with a different git player. Man, there will never be another you! Alvin, I just read Hey Soldier Boy and it hits the conscience and heart dead on. It is sad the times are dictating where the blues are going to. Hopefully peace will somehow prevail so we can focus on the good stuff. I would much rather be thinking of getting tickets to see you in New York, than looking at a hole in the skyline as a reminder of dark possibilities. Thanks for sharing with us. All the best to you. I see you are working on your "memoirs". Are you looking for any old news clippings (reviews, etc.), photos, and memorabilia from the early tour days? You'd remember me if you saw me in person - Didn't miss seeing you in Chicago. I was a free-lance writer/photographer at that time as well as a fan... and you were always so nice to me. Anyway - I have boxes of photos, clippings, magazines, back stage passes to go through. I even have movies on you! Good movies! Let me know if you're interested in any of this stuff.

It wasn't my favorite album when it came out, I guess I didn't really understand where you were going with it, but over the years, as I mellowed or became more introspective or whatever, it grew to hold a very special place in my heart. Great site, Alvin! Like a few others who have posted, caught the Woodstock segment the other night and was flooded with many great memories of the hours and hours of enjoyment that TYA's music has brought me, including first live concert (Harvard Stadium, Cambridge Mass. in '69 at age fourteen. Mott the Hoople- then an instumental band- were a great opener.) Your burning chops served as the ideal that I and all the fledgling guitar players that I knew at that time aspired to play. Although I still play recreationally, some of those guys have gone on to become accomplished pros, teachers and jazz players, and they cut their teeth doing covers of "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl" ,"Love Like a Man", and others. I'm definately going to be updating my CD collection with some Ten Years After. It sounds every bit as good now as it did then. Will definately catch the next tour. Thanks!

I'm Going Home is, to my taste, your best record ever, especially the Woodstock- and the Frankfurt (Recorded Live)-versions! As a West Virginia University student in 1972 I hitched- hiked with girlfriend(later my wife) to Pittsburgh concert. The music was beyond great, he finished with "Standing at the Station" with about 20 minute solo. Needless to say concert ran over, and we missed the late bus back to Morgantown (WVU) but ran into new friends also at the concert that let us crash over till morning. Great concert, new friends that I keep in touch with even 30 years later. When in Pittsburgh we still get together and listen to TYA and talk about that night. Thanks for the experience and all that went with it.

Alvin, As a kid in the 70’s, I was profoundly influenced by your guitar playing. It seemed to be the music I had been searching for. Now that I’ve been actively playing guitar and performing for 25+ years myself, I’d like to thank you for your tireless energy and eye-opening musical contributions. It always brings me a smile of pride when I’m playing a gig and someone says “Man, you sound like Alvin Lee!”. I'm sure you won't recall, but we met briefly several years ago in Milwaukee, Wisconsin at a little club called Shank Hall when you invited my friend Hubert Sumlin (another great influence) to sit in with you. If you get the inclination, I’d love to see you in the Milwaukee area again. And if you'd like to hear what one of your "children" sounds like, you may listen here: http://my.execpc.com/~wpwmew/LO.mp3 or here: http://my.execpc.com/~wpwmew/youdid~1.mp3 Thank you again for your marvelous influence. He's now dragging out our old records to listen to you, and I have a feeling the renewed interest in our household is just going to keep on growing. Alvin- 1st saw you when you opened for Kansas at the lovely Cow Palace in SF,CA.(late 70's I think) I had not heard your stuff, or knew what I was in for. By the time you finished your set, I was so blown away, I barely watched the "headliner". I then made a point to see you 2 weeks later at a smaller venue, and once again, was blown away. Once in SF in a small Club, you visited and I caught your incredible show, with Mr. Clemmons from Bruce's band sitting in with you...WOW... Then there was the time as you came out to play your encore "sweet 16", you bent down and kissed my date (she was hot) you made her night too! Thanks so much for sharing your talent with all of us. From reading these boards, you have touched many. And please come visit in San Francisco...soon! CC

Alvin, I feel like I woke up from a long sleep and there you were. A forever fan who was just missing for a bit, is the best way to explain my absence. Caught Woodstock the other night and I have become happily repossessed. With great enthusiasm, I tore through several closets this evening. I knew I saved my ticket stub from Madison Square Garden 1971 when I was just into my teens. Yes!!! I found it!!!! Now that I have officially joined the club I am soooooo anxious to get the news that you will be coming to New York and get the party started! You will come and see us.... won't you?!?! Georgia

Alvin, Thank You so much for your influence. I hope you enjoyed my album. Without your influence there probably would not have been a "Cowboy Hat Blues". And Thank You Toni for all your help. Hope to see you on tour in Europe this April. Ace

I want to thank Alvin and Toni for the priceless gifts that both of you have given me and my family. I'm floating by your kindness and how personal it was. Thank you so much, it will never be forgotten. I also want to thank Alvin for inspiring my son to play the guitar, which in turn has helped him so many ways and helped both of us in our relationship with each other. This has had a ripple effect of my falling in love with music again. I used to write when I was younger, but now I am inspiried to write again. This time some lyrics that my son can put music too. Alvin, this year, you also have you inspired my son's guitar teacher, to become a guitar player in the first place after hearing Undead. But being re-exposed to your music and especially on hearing your solo work for the first time has rejunivated him so much, that he is working, writing and recording an album of "his" music that he has put off for years. Thank you also be being a great power of example on how you have handled yourself during the last year, after how your former "friends" have treated you. I can only guess on how that would feel. Bless you Alvin, keep on rockin, and give your Mum, Evi and Jasmin a special hug on me. Jon

Alvin is a tremendous guitarist, and one of the finest exponents of the "Gibson" sound. I also know someone who had breakfast with him and Keith Emerson.
